A Small Thing to Look Forward To Is Still Something

Out now.

The Thing I Am Looking Forward To is available on Amazon in paperback. See the journal page for the buy links and a free preview.

Perhaps it is Saturday breakfast with someone you like. A library book you have been waiting for. The hour after a busy day when you can shut the door and put the kettle on.

A thing to look forward to can be that small.

When you look at the week ahead, appointments and obligations may be easiest to name. It can take a different question to bring the quieter possibilities into view: what is coming that I am glad about?

Give yourself a moment with that question. Choose something close enough to describe.

Bring the first minute into focus

Once you have named the thing, picture one detail. Where will you be? What might you hear? What is the first small part you are looking forward to?

Then ask what draws you towards it. The answer may be company, rest, curiosity, familiarity or the pleasure of doing something for yourself.

Here is an illustrative entry written for this article:

The thing

Walking to the bakery on Saturday morning.

Picture it

The paper bag warm against my hand and the quiet stretch of road before the shops get busy.

The pull

An hour with no need to hurry.

The useful part is the detail. “Saturday will be nice” becomes a particular piece of Saturday you can already name.

Inside The Thing I Am Looking Forward To

The Thing I Am Looking Forward To is an eight-week guided journal built around those three parts: The Thing, Picture It and The Pull. A small meter lets you mark how strong the pull feels, from a faint lift to a real pull.

The prompts explore different kinds of anticipation: something near, something far away, a small pleasure, something you are building, something beyond your control, something you get to repeat and something you have kept private. The final week looks across the whole horizon.

There are six daily entries and a review in each week, giving you 48 daily entries. The weekly Check the Horizon page gives you a place to notice what arrived or came closer.

What does visualising mean here?

The opening guidance invites you to pause and imagine a small part of what you are looking forward to. If you do not form a mental picture, you can describe it in words instead.

The journal also uses the word “manifesting” for holding a clear, specific picture of what you want. It explicitly says this is no promise that the thing will arrive. You can keep hopes uncertain and recognise the parts that are outside your control.

That distinction matters when deciding whether the journal suits you. The practice is an invitation to describe what you want and observe what happens.

Return to the things that arrived

The Then It Happened log lets you compare an event with how you pictured it. Perhaps the detail you anticipated mattered less than you expected. Perhaps the best part was something you had not imagined.

Those comparisons give you more to write about than a list of future dates. Over time, you have a record of the kinds of experiences you were drawn towards and what they were like when they came.

You can miss a day and return at the next page. You can write about a meal or a quiet hour. A faint lift is enough to describe.

Which direction do you want to look?

Choose this journal if you want your daily writing to begin with something ahead of you. If you would rather examine change you have already made, The Ground I Have Already Covered uses a Then-and-Now comparison. If you want to keep something lovely that happened today, The Delight I Almost Missed catches that moment.
