Which Journal Fits the Kind of Good You Want to Notice?

Choosing between four journals?

Each journal page has real interior pages and a free preview, so you can see what you would write before you decide.

Several journals can look inviting at once. The easier choice is often the one whose daily question you can already answer.

Would you like to keep a lovely moment before it passes? Make more room for play? See a change you have stopped giving yourself credit for? Or put something good on your horizon?

These four Inner Listener journals each begin in a different place.

Choose the question you want to return to

If you want to notice…Start with…A daily page asks you to…
A small good moment you almost missedThe Delight I Almost MissedCatch the moment, tick what it was made of and what nearly hid it, then keep one word
A playful moment you nearly stoppedThe Silliness I Let Myself EnjoyRecord the silliness, who shared it, the giggle rating and what almost stopped you; doodle if you like
How something has changed since beforeThe Ground I Have Already CoveredCompare Then and Now, add one specific example and mark the distance
A small thing you are glad is aheadThe Thing I Am Looking Forward ToName it, picture a detail and describe what draws you towards it

Delight or Silliness?

Imagine the light catching your cup while a friend tells you something kind. Delight gives you a place to keep that fleeting pleasure and notice what nearly distracted you.

Now imagine making up an absurd name for the cup and laughing at it together. Silliness follows the playful impulse and the part of you that almost stopped it.

Both can include laughter. Their questions direct your attention differently. Choose Delight for a wider range of sensory and ordinary pleasures; choose Silliness when you specifically want room for being goofy.

Ground or Looking Forward?

Ground compares the present with the past. A conversation takes less rehearsal now. A habit is easier to return to. Asking for support has become possible. You record what was different and one example you can point to.

Looking Forward begins with the future. A visit, a walk, something you are making or a familiar thing you get to repeat. You describe a detail and what draws you towards it, then return to the things that arrive.

Choose Ground when you want to recognise the distance already travelled. Choose Looking Forward when you want to spend a little time with what is ahead.

What will the commitment feel like?

All four use eight weekly sections, with six daily entries and a review in each week. That gives you 48 daily entries. Each has short prompts and space to write a little rather than fill a whole blank page.

You can miss a day and return without filling in the gap. The distinctive closing pages give you something to revisit: a Delight Index, a Silliness Hall of Fame, a Proof File, or a Then It Happened log and a view of your horizon.

Your answers can be modest. Ground allows “not sure” about the distance. Delight allows “nothing today”. Silliness allows a no-laugh day. Looking Forward lets you describe a small hope in words, including when no mental picture comes.

Try the shape before you choose

Take one of these invitations to an ordinary piece of paper:

  • Delight: Name a passing pleasure and what nearly made you miss it.
  • Silliness: Name a goofy moment and what almost stopped it.
  • Ground: Write how one situation used to be, how it is now and a recent example.
  • Looking Forward: Name something ahead, describe one detail and say why you want it.

Choose the invitation you would like to answer again tomorrow. You can begin with one journal and let that be enough.
