20 Journal Prompts for Becoming the Person You Admire

You probably know someone who stays calm when others do not, or tells the truth kindly, or finishes what they start. You may have wondered how they do it, and whether it is something you could learn.

Qualities like patience, courage and honesty are not fixed traits that some people have and others lack. They are practised, mostly in ordinary moments, and mostly imperfectly.

Why admiration is a useful signal

What you admire in other people often points to something you would like more of in yourself. It is not a reason for self-criticism. It is information about what matters to you.

Practice works best when it is small and specific: one quality, one moment from your day, one honest sentence about how you will try again. No big resolutions are needed.

20 journal prompts for becoming the person you admire

Pick one prompt and write for five minutes. Think of real moments rather than ideals, and be kind about where you are starting from. Take another prompt on another day.

  1. Which person do I admire, and what exactly do they do that I admire?
  2. Which quality do I most want to practise right now?
  3. Where was my patience tested today?
  4. When did I last show courage, even in a small way?
  5. What is one honest thing I did not say today?
  6. Where does my discipline slip, and what happens just before it does?
  7. Who could I be kinder to this week, including myself?
  8. In which situation do I feel least confident, and what would one small step look like?
  9. What did I say I would do and not finish?
  10. What helps me stay calm, and what takes it away?
  11. What moment today showed the person I am trying to be?
  12. What moment today did not?
  13. What would I do differently if I tried that moment again?
  14. What is one sentence I could tell myself before a hard moment?
  15. Who is a quiet example of the quality I want, and what do they actually do?
  16. What ordinary moment tomorrow could be my practice?
  17. What got in the way of the quality today: tiredness, hurry or pride?
  18. When did I act like the person I admire without noticing?
  19. Which quality have I been avoiding practising?
  20. Finish the sentence: tomorrow, I will try again by…

A small exercise for today

Choose one quality, such as patience. Write it down, then write one specific moment from today that tested it. Finish with one honest sentence: “Tomorrow, I will try again by…” It takes a few quiet minutes, and nothing needs to be dramatic.

You are not aiming to be perfect at it. You are aiming to notice.

This is the idea behind The Person I Practise Being: eight weeks, eight qualities (patience, courage, honesty, discipline, kindness, confidence, follow-through and calm), with a short daily page. It is a reflection tool, not a promise of results, and the pace is yours.
