I Missed a Day. Now What?

This is the question I get asked more than any other, usually from someone who has just missed two or three days in a row and is fairly convinced that means the journal has failed, or that they have. It has not, and you have not.

Why One Day Does Not Undo the Practice

Every journal in this series is built in short, self-contained cycles — a day, a week, sometimes a month — on purpose. A missed day is a gap inside one cycle, not a break in the whole thing. The next cycle starts fresh regardless of what happened in the last one. That is not a workaround for missing days. It is built into the structure from the start, because everyone misses days.

Resist the Urge to Backfill

The instinct is to go back and fill in the blank page, guessing at what Tuesday probably felt like now that it is Thursday. Do not. The whole practice depends on writing down what is actually true in the moment, not a tidy reconstruction of it after the fact. A blank page is simply a blank page. Leave it blank and carry on.

Where to Actually Pick Back Up

If you are in a daily journal — The Mindful Pattern, The Pattern Interrupt, The Fork in the Day, or The Open Hand — pick back up on today's date, not the day you missed. If you are in one of the eight-week journals — The Life I Keep Postponing or The Things I Don't Say — the same applies at the level of the week: if a week did not get much attention, let the next week's review be honest about that, and start the new week clean rather than trying to squeeze the old one back in.

A journal with a few honest gaps in it is still doing its job. The point was never a perfect streak. It was noticing the pattern often enough to actually see it, which a handful of missed days does nothing to undo.
