Track It, Name It, Choose It

Everything in The Mindful Pattern comes back to the same three steps, in the same order, every single day: track the pattern, name the pattern, choose a different response. It sounds simple written out like that, and it is, but the order matters more than it first appears to.

Tracking comes first because you cannot skip straight to choosing differently if you do not yet know, in writing rather than in memory, what you actually do. Most people can describe their general tendencies in a sentence or two. Far fewer can point to the specific thought that triggered yesterday's reaction, the emotion it produced, and where they felt it in their body. That gap between the general and the specific is exactly what the daily tracker closes.

Naming comes second, and it is where a lot of the actual shift happens. A pattern that has only ever been felt is hard to argue with. A pattern that has been written down and given a name, "I go quiet when I feel criticised," for example, is much easier to recognise the next time it shows up, often while it is still happening rather than only in hindsight.

Choosing differently is the last step, and it only becomes possible once the first two are in place. You cannot choose a different response to a pattern you have not yet tracked and named. That is the whole logic behind ninety days of daily pages, thirteen weekly reviews, and three monthly reviews: not ninety separate lessons, but one method, repeated until it holds.
