Five Signs You Are Still Gripping Something You Decided to Let Go Of

Deciding to let go and actually letting go are two separate events, and the gap between them is where most of the tiredness lives. Here are five signs that the hand is still closed.

1. You rehearse the conversation. You have already decided, yet you keep running the argument in your head, with better lines each time.

2. You check up. A profile, a message thread, a result. You tell yourself it is only curiosity.

3. Your body stays braced. Jaw, shoulders, stomach. They tighten when the subject comes up, long after the decision was made.

4. You need the decision to be right. You keep collecting evidence that it was the correct call, which suggests part of you is still negotiating.

5. You leave the door ajar. One small thing stays open, “just in case”, and you keep glancing at it.

None of this means the decision was wrong. It means the grip is slower to change than the choice. Noticing is the first loosening, and it costs nothing. The Open Hand includes a reference page of signs you might be gripping, and a daily practice for loosening one small notch at a time.
