Most of us have a few reactions that arrive on schedule. The same tone from the same person, the same email, the same remark, and the same sinking or snapping feeling, as if the scene had been rehearsed.
It can feel as though the reaction simply happens to you. Often there is a small chain underneath it: a thought, then an emotion, then a sensation in the body, then the response. Seen as one blur, it is hard to change. Seen as separate links, it becomes something you can look at.
Reactions repeat because they are efficient. The mind learns a shortcut and uses it, even when the shortcut no longer suits you. The thought that starts the chain is often so familiar that it does not register as a thought at all.
Writing slows the chain down. A few lines about the thought, the feeling and where you felt it will not fix anything on the day, but over several days a pattern tends to become visible, and a visible pattern is easier to work with.
Pick one prompt and write for five minutes. Be plain and specific, and write what happened rather than what should have happened. You can come back to a different prompt on another day.
Write three short lines about one moment from today: the thought that triggered you, the emotion it produced, and where you felt it in your body. Do not explain it and do not try to fix it. Do the same tomorrow, and keep going for a few days. Then read the lines back and see what repeats.
If something here feels heavy, put the pen down and do something ordinary. Writing is a reflection tool, not a substitute for support, so if you feel overwhelmed, talk to someone you trust or a professional.
This is the idea behind The Mindful Pattern: 90 days of tracking the thought, the emotion and the body sensation, with a weekly review and a monthly rewrite. It is a reflection tool, not a promise of results, and the pace is yours.
A 90-day guided journal for tracking the thought, the emotion and the body sensation, so you can choose a response instead of only reacting.
