What Your Best Hour Says About Your Priorities

Most people have an hour in the day when they are at their sharpest. For some it is early morning, before anyone needs anything. For others it is late evening, once the house is quiet. Whenever it falls, it is the hour when you think most clearly and have the most energy for hard things.

So what do you spend it on?

The hour that gives it away

Ask people what matters most to them and the answers tend to be sincere: a creative project, a health goal, a conversation that needs having. Look at how the best hour of an ordinary day was spent and the answer is often different. Email, messages, other people’s requests, whatever was easiest to reach.

That is not a character flaw. The urgent is loud and the important is usually quiet. But the best hour is the one place where the two cannot hide behind each other, because there is only one of it.

A question to ask without judgement

The point is not to catch yourself out. The point is to look. Today, which task got your best hour? Was it the one you would have named if someone had asked what matters most to you this week?

If yes, good. Notice it. If not, there is nothing to fix tonight. Simply name one small, honest step that would move a little of that hour, even fifteen minutes of it, towards what you actually want.

The small version

You do not need to rearrange your schedule. Try moving one thing. Tomorrow, give the first fifteen minutes of your best hour to the thing you said mattered, before anything else gets a turn.

That is the same idea The Direction I Am Choosing practises, one page at a time: name what you want, notice what the day pointed towards, and take one small step to close the gap.
